If you have been convicted with any serious traffic infractions such as driving under the influence, no insurance, vehicular accident, and reckless driving, you will be required to prove to South Dakota State, for three years, that you are insured. The form that is used as a proof of insurance to the state is called SR22 South Dakota. This is the only valid form for your suspended license to be reinstated.

It is your duty to notify your auto insurance company the soonest possible time if you are required by the state to carry an SR22 South Dakota. It is your insurance company that will testify to South Dakota state that you are currently covered by their insurance policy.

Your SR22 filing must be maintained continuously for a minimum of three years from the date you are convicted. If you happen to change your vehicle or your insurance company with in the minimum three year holding period of your SR22 coverage, you need to request for a re-filing of your SR22. If in such cases wherein your insurance company cancels your SR22 filing at anytime during the three year period, your license will automatically be re-suspended. You will again be required to pay the amount of $50.00 as your reinstatement fee.

SR22 insurance in South Dakota is normally expensive compared to other types of insurances since a lot of risks is involved here. SR22 filing is issued to high risk motorists caught for serious traffic infractions as mentioned above. Since SR22 filing is for high risk drivers, it does not anymore come shocking to anyone why most car insurance companies often charge terribly high rates for this type of insurance. Insurers are even more stringent with SR22 drivers that they can automatically get your SR22 filing suspended if you fail to pay your premium on time.
